An Anxiety Toolbox?!

Left right human brain concept. Creative part and logic part with social and business doodle isolated on white background

Let’s develop our anxiety toolbox: Our sessions will always be practical, interactive and give you an opportunity to practice the tools during the session so that it is easier to use these tools in more anxious situations.

This is one of the sessions in our new offering “Your personal stress management smorgasbord”. We would like to put the power back into your hands and give you agency to tailor-make a stress management package that really works for you. Every Monday from 19:30 – 20:45 we will be facilitating a different topic online. You decide what you  need and when and whether you would like another session. You give yourself time to apply your learnings, implement change and control the amount of new information you are exposed to. Every month our offering will change slightly, so do check in to see what’s been added.

Email contact@tt-tt.co.za to book your place by 10:00 on 12 September.

Stress Management for busy people

Take a break from your busy schedule and treat yourself to a day of rejuvenation, relaxation and practical stress management skill building as you spoil yourself. All that is needed for some stress-free me-time will be provided on this day away: your needs will be catered for with refreshing drinks, treats and a sumptuous (but healthy!) individually-packed lunch. A vegetarian option is available – please indicate if needed. A workbook and a goody bag is included.

This package also includes one individual coaching session (to be booked at a time convenient to you – online or in person) to follow through with you personally so that there is real and practical progress in your ability to manage your stress, as well as 21 days of daily support material on Whatsapp. Real change takes daily commitment and regular small changes accumulate to a changed life.

When we experience stressful circumstances, we often struggle with strong emotions like anger, pain, anxiety and fear. It feels like they are taking over our lives, and we try to avoid dealing with them for as long as possible. However, suppressing them often results in an uncontrolled pressure-cooker effect: the pot boils over or even explodes, often when it is most inconvenient. Our nervous system continues to be on high alert and we are highly strung.

There is an alternative. Regulating our nervous system so that we are more creative in our approach to life’s challenges and integrating those strong emotions into our lives opens up new possibilities. We can learn important lessons from our emotions, and harness the motivation and energy they give us, to implement real change in our circumstances or grow in our ability to deal with them. This journey can feel slightly uncomfortable at times, but the reward of reaching the destination – a more unified, integrated, cohesive personality and way of living – is well worth it.

Our course content for the day covers:

  • exploring your stressors and the effect they have on you
  • what our emotions can teach us
  • how our beliefs can keep us from positive change
  • our perceptions of how we use our time, recognising our beliefs about time and a look at some practical ideas for time management
  • an evaluation of our habits, both good and bad, and how we can
build on the good and develop healthy habits for self-care of body, mind and soul
  • the inclusion of daily rhythms into our routines as a way of changing us and coping with stress. These will include contemplation, silence, solitude, rest, restoration, renewing of your mind, journaling, contentment and simplicity.
  • most of our time, however, will be spent in applying these different practices and experiencing exercises so that you can make them authentically your own. These will then be more accessible to you in stressful situations.

Package Cost: R999 (early bird fee if you pay by 6 August) R1150 after 6 August 2022.

Date for the in-person course: Saturday 20 August 2022.

Time: 9.00 – 16.30

Pick ‘n Mix Stress Management

Does the idea of doing a whole day stress management course feel stressful in itself? Like the last thing you actually have the time for?

Although we can see the benefit in a break from daily routine, we realise that it is difficult to find the time for a whole day course. Most of us feel stressed at the thought of organising our responsibilities to free up an entire day. Let’s not talk about finding the money and the added financial pressure! We recognise that we may feel refreshed after a day in nature, but it can feel overwhelming to face all the challenging changes to develop the new “stress-free me” afterwards.  This inadvertently becomes a new source of stress. We feel stuck in the stress spiral.

With our new offering “Pick ‘n Mix Stress Management” we would like to put the power back into your hands.

Grief delayed

Delaying Grief by Khanyi Mthimunye

Build walls, to keep the pain out.

It seeps through the cracks of a rushed job.

So I build trenches in my brain,

Fill them with water to drown memories.

I can hear the clock ticking away,

As blood rushes across to send signals.

Prepare!  An explosion is imminent.

The muscles and organs are on standby.

Regulating your autonomic nervous system

In our recent video series #relaxinseconds, we focused on exercises that calm an over-stimulated sympathetic nervous system. Regulation of our autonomic nervous systems is a little more complicated than that.

The sympathetic nervous system is often in the limelight because of its well known fight, flight or freeze response. The other part, the parasympathetic, which is responsible for rest and digestion, can also unhealthily dominate our nervous system. This can become evident in lethargy, a lack of motivation, a general blahness about life, or wanting to sleep excessively. The pandemic style of stressful experiences like isolation, grief and uncertainty has meant that the parasympathetic extreme has become familiar territory to many of us.

Taking control of anxiety

Taking control of anxiety

July 17 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

R600

This 3 part course includes 2 interactive zoom group sessions of 2 hours and one individual coaching session of 1 hour (online or outside face-to-face).

There is an alternative. By integrating those strong emotions into our lives, learning what lessons we can from them, and harnessing the motivation and energy they give us, we can implement real change in our circumstances or grow in our ability to deal with them. This journey will feel uncomfortable at times, but the reward of reaching the destination – a more unified, integrated, cohesive personality and way of living – is well worth it.

Saturday 17 July 10.00 – 12.00 SAST

Managing our habits to control our anxiety:

We will explore daily rhythms and habitual reactions as a way of changing us and helping us control our anxiety. This will include an evaluation of our habits, both good and bad, and how we can build on the good, exploring the benefits of solitude, rest and restoration.  We will also engage in some anxiety reducing practices that are available to us in the moment we feel our anxiety rise.

Saturday 24 July 10.00 – 12.00 SAST

Managing our time to control our anxiety:

We will cover our perceptions of how we use our time, challenge some of our beliefs and explore our emotions about time and look at some practical ideas for time management. There will also be time to engage in some anxiety reducing practices such as contemplation, silence and relaxation.

The emphasis will be on practical experience of the tools shared so that you leave with authentic, effective tools that you have tried and applied to yourself. These will then be accessible to you in anxiety-provoking situations.

In the personal coaching session (at a time that suits you and the coach) you will have the opportunity to explore further solutions to your challenges so that there is real and practical progress in your ability to manage your anxiety.

Places limited to 10.

Responding with Resilience

As part of a private intervention addressing trauma in a company during the riots, our programme includes:

Dialogue inspired by Poetry

Poems tell stories in a powerful way and encourage us to look deeper at our own stories and experiences and how we affect each other in communities. We have found this true even in groups where there is no previous appreciation for poetry. We use poems as a catalyst to facilitate a process of self-reflection and sense-making, as we connect with each other in shared experiences that could prevent us from flourishing in home and work environments. In this particular dialogue we will present poetry about the experience of trauma and pain from different perspectives. Expect a heart-to-heart session on where we presently find ourselves – necessary before we can move forward meaningfully towards any possible solutions. This session will also forge a sense of connection as a community.

Our Response to Trauma

During this session we will look at the different ways that people react or respond to trauma. This will cover some teaching about the way our nervous systems are designed and the way this affects our bodies, how we think about trauma and how this influences whether we react or are able to respond in a more resilient way. We will explore where we find ourselves in our own experience of our bodies, thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

Practical skills for anxiety management

These skills will include different ways of controlling anxiety and regulating ones’ nervous system. There will be time allocated to practicing the skills in a non-threatening environment so that they will be available for people to use and share with others when they leave the course. The skills we will focus on in this session will be short effective exercises that can be immediately used in anxiety-provoking situations without preparation, new resources or changes in routine.

Practical skills for Resilience

The skills we will focus on in the second session on practical skills will be regular practices that help reduce anxiety and increase our ability to respond with resilience. Here we will focus on practices that need a little more planning and preparation to include our daily routines.

Think Tank – From potential to practice

This is a group coaching session which will involve people developing solutions around implementing some of their learnings from the previous process. During this group process, we come up with a picture of the positive and what these new possibilities could actually look like. And how each person can contribute to achieving the potential we have identified in practical ways by working together and starting new projects that will support them during the weeks and months to come. We also explore the resources needed to begin the journey.

There are regular comfort breaks throughout the sessions in consideration of the emotionally loaded content and the online environment.
