Responding with resilience

a person under pressure pulling threads of tension to both sides of their faceDo you find yourself reacting rather than responding when you are under pressure? How can we train ourselves to respond with resilience? What does responding with resilience practically look like? Can we be more prepared?

Pressure can come from at least three different sources – firstly, unpredictable natural disasters, secondly, personal challenges or thirdly, living in an oppressive system.  The affect of the first is often devastating as in the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria or the floods in many parts of South Africa.  At some stage we will all experience the second in personal challenges of illness, accidents, financial constraints, work stress, relational strain and death of a loved one. Many are exposed to the third when discrimination, injustice, incompetence, neglect, conflicts or violence in a system prevent the flourishing of all. Some people experience pressure from all areas at the same time. Consequently, they can feel traumatised. Responding with resilience first involves investigating the links between our previous traumas and how we respond to the current pressure we are under. These memories of trauma have a hold on our emotions, thoughts and bodies.

During this session, we will learn about what a resilient response looks like. Then we will be able to compare ourtraumatic memories are rooted in our nervous system affecting our memories, emotions and bodies reactions to the ideal resilient response and evaluate our own areas of growth.  This will include exploring how to change our reactions and break the automatic links to previous experiences. This session will help develop your self-awareness and strengthen your emotional intelligence.

This is one of the sessions in our offering “Training resilience”. More details here.  We will be developing our resilience every second Wednesday from 22 June onwards at 19:30 – 20:45 online. Every session will focus on a different aspect that affects our resilience at a cost of R100. As a result, you can decide what you  need and when and whether you would like another session. Take the time to apply your learnings, implement change and control the amount of new information you expose yourself to. Every month our offering may change slightly. Do check in regularly to see what’s been adjusted.

Reacting or responding?

Close up of brain networks that can help us respond instead of reactingDo you find yourself reacting rather than responding under stress? We will explore our stressors and how to regulate the effect they have on our autonomic nervous systems. Yes, it is possible! This will help us to respond intentionally and creatively rather than reacting automatically to a stressful situation. We will have access to more areas in our brains even when we find ourselves in stressful situations.
There will be an opportunity to practice the regulating exercises so that they are available to you when you need them…

This is one of the sessions in our new offering “Pick ‘n Mix stress management”. More details here. We would like to put the power back into your hands and give you agency to tailor-make a stress management package that really works for you. November’s Pick ‘n Mix Stress Management

Pick 'n Mix Stress Management on Wednesdays in October online 19:30 to 20:45, illustrated with a colourful variety of fresh fruit and vegetablesDoes the idea of doing a whole day stress management course feel stressful in itself? Like the last thing you actually have the time for? Does it feel too stressful to organise someone else to take over your responsibilities to free you up? Or does paying for a longer course just add more financial pressure?

With our offering ” Pick ‘n Mix Stress Management” we would like to put the power back into your hands. Now you can claim the agency to tailor-make a stress management package that really works for you. Every Wednesday in November from 19:30 – 20:45 we will be facilitating a different topic online (R100 per session). You decide what you need and what fits your budget. You plan when and whether you would like another session. You give yourself time to apply your learnings and implement change. You control the amount of new information and challenges you are exposed to. Every month our offering will change slightly – we have two new topics this month. Do check in regularly to see what’s been adjusted. We may also try out a different day of the week.

In November you can select from the following topics:

Controlling time (2 November): Am I controlling time or is time controlling me?! We will reflect on our perceptions of how we use our time, explore our beliefs about time and look at some practical ideas for time management.

Re-directing the emotional rollercoaster (9 November): We can learn from our emotions before they run away with us, understand our triggers and learn to regulate our instinctive reactions.

Healthy habits (16 November): Let’s honestly evaluate our habits, both good and bad. How can we build on the good and develop healthyhabits for self-care of body, mind and soul? We will explore what keeps us stuck in the same old rut…

Can we respond instead of react? (23 November) We will explore our stressors and how to regulate the effect they have on our autonomic nervous systems. Our aim is to respond intentionally and creatively rather than automatically to a stressful situation.

Endings and beginnings (30 November): As we approach the end of the year, we would like to close off with a poetry dialogue that encourages self-reflection and explores our feelings around endings and beginnings. When we suppress these issues they can go underground, affect us subconsciously and internalize stress into our bodies. This can result in inter-personal explosions that seemed to come out of nowhere. The end of the year is an opportunity for closure so that we can start with a clean slate in 2023.

The fact that we live in a stressful time is undeniable. Pressure is rising in the systemic environment. Many of us are also experiencing personal pressures. Let’s be pro-active in terms of developing our own stress management skill. We can make a change, one step at a time.

Integrating all aspects of YOU

While I was doing my coaching course, we were advised to focus on finding and developing our own niche as coaches. My thought process kept bringing me back to the term “integration” – a concept that has often featured in my life, in a number of ways.

I was first introduced to “integration” when, as an Occupational Therapy student in the nineties, we learnt about how better results are achieved when the two sides of our bodies and brains work together. Much more so, than when we rely on only one side. Integration can be defined as the process of combining two or more things in an effective way so that they form a unified whole that is more than merely the sum of its parts. Disintegration then is the loss of effectiveness, cohesion, strength – a process of fragmenting or falling apart. We experience disintegration when we feel overwhelmed by external and internal stressors and challenges, when our parts are not working together smoothly.

When we experience stressful circumstances, we often struggle with strong emotions like anger, pain, anxiety and fear. It feels like they are taking over our lives, and often we try to avoid dealing with them for as long as possible. However, suppressing them often results in an uncontrolled pressure-cooker effect: the pot boils over or even explodes, often when it is most inconvenient.
