The ticking time bomb!

Ticking time of an old fashioned pocket watchAm I controlling time or is time controlling me?! Ticking time increases pressure…
As we hear the clock ticking we are often more aware of the passing of time and not able to focus on the task at hand. What is your relationship with time? We will reflect on our perceptions of how we use our time and analyse our beliefs about time. We will also explore some practical ideas for time management to reduce the effect of ticking time pressure.

This is one of the sessions in our new offering “Your personal stress management smorgasbord”. We would like to put the power back into your hands and give you agency to tailor-make a stress management package that really works for you. Every Wednesday in October from 19:30 – 20:45 we will be facilitating a different topic online. You decide what you  need and when and whether you would like another session. You give yourself time to apply your learnings, implement change and control the amount of new information you are exposed to. Every month our offering will change slightly, so do check in to see what’s been added. More details about the smorgasbord.

Email contact@tt-tt.co.za to book your place by 10:00 on 5 October.

Healthy Habits?!

Can I really change my habits? Remember all those failed new year resolutions that did not make it through January? We will evaluate our current habits, both good and bad, discuss what often leads to failure to change and explore how we can build on the good and develop healthy habits for self-care of body, mind and soul.

Re-directing the emotional rollercoaster

Just after our emotions have run away with us again, we wonder if we will ever learn?! In this session we will find out what our emotions can teach us, understand our triggers and learn to regulate our instinctive reactions so that we can respond instead of react. We will explore the possibilities around changing our emotions…

Stress Management for busy people

Take a break from your busy schedule and treat yourself to a day of rejuvenation, relaxation and practical stress management skill building as you spoil yourself. All that is needed for some stress-free me-time will be provided on this day away: your needs will be catered for with refreshing drinks, treats and a sumptuous (but healthy!) individually-packed lunch. A vegetarian option is available – please indicate if needed. A workbook and a goody bag is included.

This package also includes one individual coaching session (to be booked at a time convenient to you – online or in person) to follow through with you personally so that there is real and practical progress in your ability to manage your stress, as well as 21 days of daily support material on Whatsapp. Real change takes daily commitment and regular small changes accumulate to a changed life.

When we experience stressful circumstances, we often struggle with strong emotions like anger, pain, anxiety and fear. It feels like they are taking over our lives, and we try to avoid dealing with them for as long as possible. However, suppressing them often results in an uncontrolled pressure-cooker effect: the pot boils over or even explodes, often when it is most inconvenient. Our nervous system continues to be on high alert and we are highly strung.

There is an alternative. Regulating our nervous system so that we are more creative in our approach to life’s challenges and integrating those strong emotions into our lives opens up new possibilities. We can learn important lessons from our emotions, and harness the motivation and energy they give us, to implement real change in our circumstances or grow in our ability to deal with them. This journey can feel slightly uncomfortable at times, but the reward of reaching the destination – a more unified, integrated, cohesive personality and way of living – is well worth it.

Our course content for the day covers:

  • exploring your stressors and the effect they have on you
  • what our emotions can teach us
  • how our beliefs can keep us from positive change
  • our perceptions of how we use our time, recognising our beliefs about time and a look at some practical ideas for time management
  • an evaluation of our habits, both good and bad, and how we can
build on the good and develop healthy habits for self-care of body, mind and soul
  • the inclusion of daily rhythms into our routines as a way of changing us and coping with stress. These will include contemplation, silence, solitude, rest, restoration, renewing of your mind, journaling, contentment and simplicity.
  • most of our time, however, will be spent in applying these different practices and experiencing exercises so that you can make them authentically your own. These will then be more accessible to you in stressful situations.

Package Cost: R999 (early bird fee if you pay by 6 August) R1150 after 6 August 2022.

Date for the in-person course: Saturday 20 August 2022.

Time: 9.00 – 16.30

Venue: Centurion. More details after registration.

Book your place with vera@tt-tt.co.za.

The venue is covered, but open to the outside. We are committed to keeping our environmental footprint as small as possible – no one-use plastic to be found at our course.

Pick ‘n Mix Stress Management

Does the idea of doing a whole day stress management course feel stressful in itself? Like the last thing you actually have the time for?

Although we can see the benefit in a break from daily routine, we realise that it is difficult to find the time for a whole day course. Most of us feel stressed at the thought of organising our responsibilities to free up an entire day. Let’s not talk about finding the money and the added financial pressure! We recognise that we may feel refreshed after a day in nature, but it can feel overwhelming to face all the challenging changes to develop the new “stress-free me” afterwards.  This inadvertently becomes a new source of stress. We feel stuck in the stress spiral.

With our new offering “Pick ‘n Mix Stress Management” we would like to put the power back into your hands.

Grief delayed

Delaying Grief by Khanyi Mthimunye

Build walls, to keep the pain out.

It seeps through the cracks of a rushed job.

So I build trenches in my brain,

Fill them with water to drown memories.

I can hear the clock ticking away,

As blood rushes across to send signals.

Prepare!  An explosion is imminent.

The muscles and organs are on standby.

Regulating your autonomic nervous system

In our recent video series #relaxinseconds, we focused on exercises that calm an over-stimulated sympathetic nervous system. Regulation of our autonomic nervous systems is a little more complicated than that.

The sympathetic nervous system is often in the limelight because of its well known fight, flight or freeze response. The other part, the parasympathetic, which is responsible for rest and digestion, can also unhealthily dominate our nervous system. This can become evident in lethargy, a lack of motivation, a general blahness about life, or wanting to sleep excessively. The pandemic style of stressful experiences like isolation, grief and uncertainty has meant that the parasympathetic extreme has become familiar territory to many of us.
